About Risum Resort
Our Story
Risum Resort is the first and oldest resort in the Haa Valley. Its name means “Three Mountains”, inspired by the sacred peaks of Meri Puensum, and it sits near Wangtsa village at 2,700 m (8,856 ft), overlooking the Haa Wangchuk Lo Dzong.
Meri Puensum — the “Three Brothers of the Hills” — rises before you as three ridges representing the Bodhisattvas Manjushri (Wisdom), Avalokiteshvara (Compassion) and Vajrapani (Power), while to the east the serene Haa Valley unfolds. Built in traditional Bhutanese architectural style combined with modern comfort, the resort is known for its tranquil surroundings, personalised service and genuine Bhutanese hospitality.
Our mission is to make the Haa Valley an exceptional destination for travellers seeking nature, adventure, authentic Bhutanese culture and meaningful family experiences — and to look after your comfort and well-being throughout your stay.
A family-owned retreat
Risum Resort was established in 2004 by Rinchen Khandu and his wife, Zam. Together they have created more than a resort — a home where guests experience authentic Bhutanese hospitality, discover the traditions of the Haa Valley and reconnect with nature.

Rinchen Khandu
A respected entrepreneur with a background in the wood and furniture industry, honed during specialised experience in Japan. He served as President of the Association of Wood-Based Industries of Bhutan for 11 years and has long championed his community — as Chairman of the Haa Moenlam Chhenmo Executive Committee for 10 years, Chairman of Yanglop Choegi Lotey Tshogpa since 2016, and founder of the Haa Valley Cooperative, created to open opportunities for local youth.

A life of service
He was a Board Member of the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) for 7 years and Chairman of the Dzongkhag Business Development Committee of Haa under the BCCI for 10 years. Today he serves as Mayor of Haa Thromde, working towards the sustainable development of Haa while preserving its cultural heritage and natural environment.

Zam & the gardens
Zam's warmth and dedication bring the resort to life. Passionate about gardening and floral design, she tends the resort's gardens where seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruits are grown organically. Much of the fresh produce served in our restaurant comes from these gardens — a genuine farm-to-table experience.

If a confirmed booking is cancelled or changed 30 days or more before arrival, 50% of the total is charged. Cancellations within 30 days of arrival, no-shows and early departures are charged 100%.

A deposit may be requested to confirm your reservation, with the balance settled on or before departure.
Bhutan's visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee are set by the government, are separate from your room booking and are handled through your tour operator — see our Travel Policy.
Most guests fly into Paro International Airport and drive over the scenic Chele La pass into the Haa valley. The resort is about 2 km along the road towards Wangtsa village, marked by a sign on the right.

Our restaurant serves authentic Bhutanese, Indian and Continental cuisine, prepared with farm-to-table produce from Zam's organic gardens. Evening tea with snacks is served daily.
